I left the hotel about 5:30 am to catch the calm conditions and early light. I noticed that I only had just under 1/4 of a tank of gas as I passed that last gas station leaving town. I thought that would be plenty for a 24 mile round trip. About three quarters of the way up to the basin on a winding 4WD road, the gas gauge was now on empty and I and was forced to turn around and head back to town to fill up, delaying me about 20-30 minutes. When I finally made it up the basin, I immediately shot this image. If it wasn’t for the gas detour, I might have been too early and may have missed taking this shot. If you travel just a short distance in almost any direction you will find yourself in vast, colorful fields of mountain wildflowers. The uniquely shaped Mount Crested Butte in the background is a ski resort with a summit elevation of over 12,100 feet. In order to get the wildflowers in the foreground and the mountains in the background in sharp focus, I needed my depth of field to be from about 2 feet to infinity. With the late afternoon and overcast light causing my shutter speed to be longer than 1/2 second, I was fortunate that there was no wind to blur the flowers. At one point along the way up, the road (if you want to call it one) goes under a cliff for about 100 yards and is only passable by one vehicle. This shallow lake sits at an elevation of 8,200 feet and was once a resort owned by Abner Sprague. Just before Rocky Mountain National Park was established in 1915, Sprague Lake was enlarged by damming the far end to create better fishing for his lodge guests. I watched the forecast the night before, and the weatherman said to expect only about an inch, so I didn’t plan to get up early to photograph. When I woke up and looked out the window, it was a winter wonderland. I cursed the weatherman and then myself for listening to him as I scrambled to get my gear ready to go. Fortunately, the temperature was in the teens and I was able to drive to this location before the snow melted. After I spent several hours photographing the fall colors in the surrounding area, I decided to take the scenic route to Vail where we were staying. This photo was taken near Marble Colorado, a ghost town about 20 miles southwest of Aspen. At one time, Marble was the third largest industrial city in Colorado and thousands of people worked here. The marble used for the Lincoln Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was mined and finished here. Longs Peak has an elevation of over 14,400 ft and I climbed to the top of this peak in 2000. I used a 300 mm lens to compress and add scale to the image. The temperature was in the low 90’s when I left my house near Boulder in the mid afternoon, but when I reached my location, I needed a jacket. The view from this location is spectacular as you see Longs Peak and the Continental Divide. Trail Ridge Road climbs above the tree line to the elevation of 12,000 ft. This Alpine Highway is also the highest continually paved highway in the United States. It was dark when I finished shooting and had to find my way out the desert back to my car. I made a mental note of a ridge so I had something to aim for and headed for it. I kept walking and walking without running into the road and started to get worried of being lost in the desert overnight. My legs were getting shredded by low cactus that I couldn’t see and at one point, I brushed into a furry animal that was crossing my path. I finally made it to the road and found my car. Earl had the stone buried in a secret spot until he found the perfect place to use it. To his imagination, the nine-ton granite boulder closely resembled a map of lower Michigan, including its veins marking major highways.It is said that Earl kept the measurements of the stone in his head all those years but when the stone was lowered through a hole in the rafters, it didn’t fit. Young had an easy explanation – it lay in the ground so long it grew 11 inches. After the stone was finally dropped in place, the floor gave way and had to be ripped out and reinforced with steel beams. I was heading to Steamboat when I saw a Scenic Byway sign. As I exited onto the Byway, I thought I saw a sign that said 40 miles to Meeker, so I assumed I could make it in about 2 hours including photo stops. About 50 miles later, I saw another sign that said 40 miles to Meeker. I looked at my near empty gas gauge and panic set in. I was pretty sure that there would be no gas stations on this rural mountain road and that I would have to coast into Meeker on fumes. The only good news was that it appeared to be mostly down hill. It was getting dark and my anxiety was building when I spotted a Standard Station in the middle of nowhere. I bought a GPS unit the next week. Haiyaha means “big rocks” in Native American. In this section before the lake, you have to navigate through large boulders like the ones you see in the foreground. The mountain in the center of the photo is Hallett Peak (12,713), forms part of the Continental Divide. I have been to Dream Lake several times at sunrise, but this was the first time there was absolutely no wind so I could capture a mirror like reflection. This shot was taken through one of the University Memorial Center’s archways in mid July. The outdoor fountain court was built in 1964. In 1993, Fountain Court was rededicated to honor CU alum and blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. Before the buffalo was elected mascot, CU mascots included a goat, mule and bulldog. CU Boulder Campus https://www.mikebartonphotos.com/photo/crested-butte-lupines/ https://www.mikebartonphotos.com/images/large/21-Crested-Mt-6x4.jpg Crested Butte lupines Crested Butte is located in Southwest Colorado and calls itself the Wildflower Capitol of Colorado where the annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival is a weeklong event held every July. If you travel just a short distance in almost any direction you will find yourself in vast, colorful fields of mountain wildflowers. The uniquely shaped Mount Crested Butte in the background is a ski resort with a summit elevation of over 12,100 feet. In order to get the wildflowers in the foreground and the mountains in the background in sharp focus, I needed my depth of field to be from about 2 feet to infinity. With the late afternoon and overcast light causing my shutter speed to be longer than 1/2 second, I was fortunate that there was no wind to blur the flowers. I like to photograph wildflowers on partly cloudy or overcast days, because the diffused light reveals fine detail and saturates the color.
