Wilson Peak Window

Alta Ghost Town near Telluride

This ghost town is located at about 11,800 ft off Hwy 62 south of Telluride. Its top population was 100 during the gold boom. An aerial tramway was used to move the ore to the mill below. George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla worked at this site, making it the first mine to use AC electricity. Snow covered Wilson Peak (featured on the Coors Brewing Company label) can be seen off in the distance through the window. Gold was discovered here by Jack Mann in 1878.
