Bay View 23
Bay View, Michigan
Bay View is a captivating community set along Little Traverse Bay among beech and oak trees just northeast of Petoskey. Founded as a Methodist camp and summer retreat in 1875, it was originally formed during the Chautauqua movement due to the area’s beautiful lakeside location, its healthy summer climate and availability by rail and steamship.
Bay View’s terraced land quickly transformed into a summer resort community. Twenty simple cottages and several community buildings were built by 1877. Within ten years, another 125 cottages, a hotel and a chapel were built. Today, Bay View is comprised of more than 440 cottages (the majority of which were built before 1890), two historic inns, thirty community buildings and a post office. The resort is a registered National Historic Landmark. Photo © copyright by Mike Barton.
